New York: In a significant development, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday became the world’s wealthiest man, thus surpassing Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates after his shares surged in the day.
The Forbes magazine said its real-time tracking of personal fortunes showed Bezos with a net worth of USD 90.5 billion, ahead of the USD 90 billion for Gates.
Bezos, 53, owns around 17 per cent of the equity of Amazon, which has been expanding from its original mission as an online retailer to a diversified tech firm in cloud computing, online video, computing hardware and artificial intelligence.
Amazon shares have performed strongly over the past year and later on Thursday the company is expected to report a further increase in sales, one of the reason for the share price rise.
In recent years, Bezos has focused much of his attention on his Blue Origin space rocket business and the Washington Post newspaper, which he bought in 2013, as well as some less publicised endeavours.
