New Delhi: In yet another terror-related incident, a young army officer, who had gone to attend a relatives’s wedding in Kashmir was first abducted and then shot dead by terrorists.
The deceased, identified as Umar Fayyaz, a Lieutenant, had joined the army five months ago and was at present serving in Akhnoor district.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police today recovered his bullte-ridden body from Shopian district.
The officer was on leave and had gone for his cousin’s wedding at Kulgaon in south Kashmir when he was kidnapped around 10 pm on Tuesday.
According to sources, the killing marks a worrying trend of terrorists targeting army officers even when they are off duty.
An army official said they were examining the circumstances in which the officer was found dead.
It is to be noted that an an advisory was recently put out by the state police asking its personnel not to visit ancestral homes, especially in south Kashmir areas.
There has been a spike in militant activities in most districts of south Kashmir including, Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam where terrorists are launching attacks on police personnel to vent out their anger against the government.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Omar Abdullah mourned the death of the Army officer. “Very sad and alarming. Condolences to the family. May Lieutenant Umar Fayaz’s soul rest in peace”, he said.
